Short answer? Absolutely! Long answer? Pop the kettle on and get comfy….
Your wedding day will fly by faster than your first dance song. One minute you’re getting ready, the next you’re wondering how it’s already dark and why your feet hurt. Photos are the one thing that let you relive it all — the big moments and the tiny. The emotional and blink-and-you’ll-miss-it bits.
But I get it. Wedding budgets are real. So let’s talk honestly about whether hiring a wedding photographer is worth it, and answer the big questions couples always ask..
- Should I get my friend to take them and save the cost?
- What will a photographer capture that a friend won’t?
- Why are professional photographers expensive?
- Why does it really matter?
- What do other couples say?

SHOULD I GET MY FRIEND TO TAKE THEM AND SAVE THE COST?
We all have that friend — the one with a good camera and a great eye, who takes beautiful photos on their travels. And sometimes, they’ll very kindly offer to bring their camera along and help you save a bit of money.
It’s a genuinely lovely gesture, but here’s the thing most couples don’t realise…
Your friend is also your guest
They’re there to laugh, cry, hug you, drink prosecco, dance badly, and actually enjoy your wedding. The moment they’re responsible for your photos, they’re no longer fully present. Instead of watching you walk down the aisle, they’re worrying about settings. Instead of enjoying speeches, they’re hovering at the edges of the room.
That’s a lot of pressure to put on someone you love.
There’s also the emotional weight. If something goes wrong — missed moments, blurry images, lost files — that’s not just disappointing, it can affect friendships. A professional photographer carries that responsibility so your guests don’t have to.
Let your friend be in the photos, not behind the camera.

WHat WILL A PHOTOGRAPHER CAPTURE THAT A FRIEND WON’T?
This is where the magic really happens.
A professional wedding photographer isn’t just taking pictures — they’re telling the story of your day.
A friend might focus on the obvious moments. A photographer is quietly watching everything. The proud (slightly teary) look from your dad, the grin your partner can’t hide during the vows, the moment the speeches tip from heartfelt into hilarious. These little flashes happen so fast, but a good photographer sees them coming and catches them before they’re gone. Quietly observing and waiting for the little flashes of magic that unfold throughout the day.
When you see your wedding gallery it’ll feel like watching your wedding day back as a story, from start to finish.

why are professional photographers expensive?
This is a really fair question — and one I hear a lot. On the surface, it can look like you’re paying someone to turn up for a few hours and take photos. In reality, you’re investing in years of experience (in my case 20 years!) and a huge amount of work that happens both before and after your wedding day.
Behind the scenes there’s planning, meetings, location scouting, timeline advice, backing up your images multiple times, carefully editing each photo by hand, and delivering a gallery that tells the full story of your day. There’s also professional insurance, equipment and business costs and the reassurance that if something goes wrong, you’re protected.
You’re not just paying for the time on the day — you’re paying for peace of mind, consistency, and knowing that your memories are in safe, capable hands. And when it comes to something you can’t re-do, that experience really matters.
Weddings also have a habit of doing their own thing. The forecast changes. The light disappears. It rains sideways just as you’re about to walk down the aisle. This is where a professional photographer really earns their keep.
I turn up with a plan — and a back-up plan. Spare cameras, extra lenses, umbrellas, safety pins and more batteries and memory cards than I’ll ever need. I know how to work with harsh midday sun, dark ceremony spaces, fairy lights, candles and sudden downpours. And if the weather isn’t playing ball? I’ll already have wet-weather ideas up my sleeve so we can still make something beautiful (and fun) without any stress.
You don’t need to worry about the “what ifs”. That’s my job.

why does it really matter?
THESE ARE YOUR FOREVER PHOTOS
After the cake’s gone and the dress is packed up – your photos are what you keep coming back to.
They’re for first anniversaries and tenth ones. For showing your kids, your mates, or just each other on the sofa with a glass of wine. They hold the nerves, the belly laughs, the people you love most — and all the moments you didn’t even realise were happening.
That’s why who you choose really matters. You’re handing over the job of telling your story — not just what the day looked like, but how it felt. And when it comes to memories like these, it’s worth getting it right.

what do other couples say?
Real life couple experiences are the best way to learn about about what a professional wedding photographer meant to them. Google reviews is a brilliant place to get an overall view of someone’s ability. I’m super proud to have over 125 5*star google reviews and I do a little happy dance whenever someone takes the time to leave me one.
