What to ask your wedding venue before you book

Since you’re still in the early planning stages, I thought I’d share a few things I’ve seen over the years that couples don’t always think to ask when viewing wedding venues…

After photographing hundreds of weddings across the UK, I can honestly say this: the venue you choose shapes everything — your timeline, your guest experience, and yes… your photographs.

When you’re walking around a beautiful barn or country house with a glass of fizz in hand, it’s easy to focus on how it feels – and believe me that is definitely important. BUT there are a few practical (and often forgotten) questions that can make a huge difference to how smoothly your day flows.

So here is what to ask your wedding venue before you book — the kind of questions most couples don’t realise matter until it’s too late.

Let’s talk lighting – my secret weapon 🙂

Lighting is everything in photography. It affects the mood, the colours, and how your images feel years from now.

Yet it’s one of the least-asked-about things during venue viewings.

Here’s what to ask:

  • What direction does the ceremony space face?
  • What time does the sun set during our wedding month?
  • Are there large windows or is it mostly artificial lighting?
  • What does the space look like after dark?
  • Is there a covered outdoor option with good natural light if it rains?

For example, a north-facing ceremony room with soft window light? Dreamy.
A low ceiling with orange spotlights and no windows? A little trickier (but still workable with the right approach).

I always work with whatever space I’m given — but understanding the lighting beforehand helps you set realistic expectations and plan your timeline beautifully.

TIMELINES AND FLOW

A venue might look stunning — but how it functions is just as important.

What to ask your wedding venue before you book:

  • How long do we actually have the space?
  • Is there a hard cut-off time for music?
  • How long does it take to flip the room from ceremony to reception?
  • Where do guests go during that transition?
  • Is there space for a private 10-minute breather after the ceremony?

That last one? Hugely underrated.

After your ceremony, emotions are high. Having a quiet space for just the two of you — even for five minutes — lets everything sink in. It also gives me the chance to get everyone ready for your fun confetti shot while you have a little breather.

When venues have a smooth transition plan, your wedding day timeline feels effortless rather than rushed.

the wet weather plan

Because… unfortunately even in August, we may still need one ☔️

It’s not about being pessimistic — it’s about being prepared.

Ask:

  • What does the wet weather option actually look like set up?
  • Can we see photos of a real wedding using the backup plan?
  • Who makes the final call on moving indoors — and when?
  • Is there space for group photos if it rains?

I’ve photographed incredible weddings in every kind of weather — but the venues that have a genuinely thought-through backup plan always feel calmer on the day.

your guests expereince

When choosing your wedding venue, it’s easy to focus on how it looks in pictures. But your guests’ experience shapes the atmosphere of your whole day.

What to ask your wedding venue before you book:

  • Is there enough parking?
  • Are there nearby hotels or transport options?
  • Is the venue accessible for elderly or disabled guests?
  • Are bathrooms easily accessible from the main reception space?

If guests are stressed about parking or logistics, it subtly affects the mood. When everything is easy and comfortable, people relax — and relaxed guests create the best dance floors and candid moments.

hidden logistics

These are the questions that rarely get asked… but absolutely should.

  • Are there sound restrictions?
  • Are candles, confetti or sparklers allowed?
  • Are there supplier restrictions?
  • Is there a designated vendor meal area?

Always check what kind of confetti your venue allows (and in which areas) so that you and your photographer know the venues requirements before the day.

The right venue doesn’t just feel right and look beautiful — it supports your timeline, enhances your photographs, keeps your guests comfortable, and allows you to relax into your day.

After photographing weddings in barns, manor houses, marquees, vineyards and everything in between, I’ve seen how small logistical details can make a huge difference.

And when those details are thought through? Your wedding day feels effortless.

If You’re Venue Hunting Right Now…

Take this list with you to your next viewing.

Ask the slightly unglamorous questions.

Picture the space at sunset.
Picture it in rain.
Picture it with 100 guests moving between rooms.

And if you’d like a photographer who’s seen it all (including sideways rain and 4pm January darkness 😅) and knows how to make the most of any space — I’d love to chat.

You can get in touch here, and tell me all about your plans.
